I am so excited to have found your site. I teach Spanish but have wanted to learn Portuguese for years! Thank you. I hope Spanish doesn’t prove to be an impediment.

I speak functional Spanish and my girlfriend teaches Spanish in Spain and is about to get her master’s in Spanish. I’ve learned Portuguese in the past and I feel like they’re distinct enough to keep separated in your head but I certainly get confused with adding words that are new to me in both Spanish and Portuguese. My advice would be to keep a Google spreadsheet with columns: type (v, adj, n); English; Spanish; Portuguese; sentence using word in Spanish; entirely different sentence using word in Portuguese. After a a month of doing this I turn them into flashcards with Spanish on one side and Portuguese on the other. This has always helped me compartmentalize. My girlfriend, on the other hand, finds learning Portuguese too daunting at this moment in her Spanish journey, but I think that’s because she doesn’t want it to interfere with her teaching.

I married a woman from Porto Alegre, Brasil ten years ago. Despite periodic lessons, I have had difficulty remembering the material. At 60 years of age, I guess my memory wasn’t what it was when I was younger. I hope your approach will work for me.
